According to ATSSA (The American Traffic Safety Services Association) the number of drivers in the US who are over 60 is expected to reach 70 million by the year 2030.
Most older drivers will continue to drive safely well into their retirement years. However, there will also be a significant number of people continuing to drive with the added challenges of vision, cognition and motor skill changes that often come with age.
In an effort to make the roads safer for all drivers, the FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) published “Guidelines and Recommendations to Accommodate Older Drivers”. This guide outlines many simple and low-cost changes that can be made to our roads to make driving easier and safer for older drivers well into the future. Here are just a few of the recommendations:
- Larger traffic signs
- Pavement markings to show turn paths
- More advanced warnings of traffic signals
- Reflective sign posts
- Traffic signs with a higher level of reflectivity
