• New Commercials Raise Work Safety Awareness

A new line of safety ads will soon air on TV in Alberta, Canada. Ads that will surely make a person think twice the next time they see a potential hazard at the workplace.

Most of us know the obvious signs that a workplace is unsafe – cluttered aisles, the blocking of emergency exits, sticking your hand into a running machine – but do we ever think about the little things that can cause injuries? Things like a protruding nail, a loose ladder rung, a cracked hard hat. Well these new commercials in Alberta help bring attention to these types of workplace hazards.

The ads feature stories that involve preventable injuries and are narrated by work tools who so called “caused” the injuries. Sound interesting? Well below is an excerpt from the article written by Edmonton Journal that portrays one of the commericals via words. Imagine this…

One ad shows a nail sticking out dangerously from a pallet as a voice tells its story: “There once was a nail without a job,” the story goes.

“He’d done his duty proudly for years then one day it was taken from him. He was sure someone would notice and put him back to work. But no one did. Hope turned to despair. Finally, he decided he would be ignored no longer.”

The commercial ends as a man kneeling underneath the nail stands up. Viewers don’t see the injury but hear a sickening sound effect.

Now I don’t know about you but just reading that makes me cringe. So the next time you notice a potential hazard think twice before walking by. Be sure to notify the proper people and have the issue addressed ASAP. Always remember that…
