Do you know what today is? Sure, it’s May 5th and to a lot of people this day is a day to celebrate Cinco de Mayo; the day the Mexican army experienced victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. But did you also know it is Occupational Safety and Health Professional Day?
That’s right, each year the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) take part in North American Occupational Safety and Health Week (NAOSH). It occurs annually during the first full week in May and Occupational Safety and Health Professional (OSHP) Day always takes place on the Wednesday of NAOSH Week. This year it happens to fall on May 5th sharing the day with the ever popular Cinco de Mayo.
“The purpose of this day is to recognize the ongoing efforts of occupational safety, health and environmental professionals to protect people, property and the environment.” as stated on The American Society of Safety Engineers Web site.
