  • OSHA Looks to Make Companies Record Job-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders

OSHA is pushing for federal rules that would require companies to count job-related musculoskeletal disorders – a step that could make it easier for safety officials to prevent such injuries.

But the emerging plan may also provoke a battle with business groups. Industry leaders fear it could pave the way for regulation to prevent MSDs, the most common injuries in American factories.

Often caused by repetitive tasks and heavy lifting, MSDs afflict the muscles and nerves in wrists, arms, necks and backs. They include sprains and strains, along with common on-the-job injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome and tendinitis.

Excerpted from the Charlotte Observer. Read the entire article here.

Seton carries a wide variety of Ergonomic products, which are designed to lessen stress on joints and muscles and add extra support when lifting or during repeptetive tasks. Check out Seton’s full line of Ergonomics.

  • Give OSHA a Piece of Your Mind

    Excerpted from the OSHA Website:

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today announced a public meeting, “OSHA Listens,” to solicit comments and suggestions from OSHA stakeholders on key issues facing the agency. The meeting is scheduled for Feb. 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST in Washington, D.C.

Some of the questions OSHA invites public input on include:

    • What can the agency do to enhance and encourage the efforts of employers, workers and unions to identify and address workplace hazards?
    • What are the most important emerging or unaddressed health and safety issues in the workplace, and what can OSHA do to address these?
    • How can the agency improve its efforts to engage stakeholders in programs and initiatives?
    • Are there additional measures to improve the effectiveness of the agency’s current compliance assistance efforts and the onsite consultation program to ensure small businesses have the information needed to provide safe workplaces?
    • What specific actions can the agency take to enhance the voice of workers in the workplace, particularly workers who are hard to reach, who do not have ready access to information about hazards or their rights, or who are afraid to exercise their rights?

The public meeting will be held at the Frances Perkins Building auditorium, U.S. Department of Labor, 200 Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, D.C. To attend and/or make an oral presentation, individuals must register by e-mail at stakeholder.meeting@dol.gov by close of business on Feb. 3. In the e-mail, include:

    • Your name, title, company or organization (if applicable), address, telephone number and e-mail address.
    • If you wish to make a short presentation, the specific topic or issue to be addressed.

Those unable to attend may send written comments to OSHA Docket Office, Docket Number OSHA-2010-0004, Technical Data Center, Room N-2625, U.S. Department of Labor, 200 Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20210, or submit them via e-mail to stakeholder.meeting@dol.gov. Identify all comments with the docket number.

  • Ramp Up Your Recordkeeping in January

The importance of recordkeeping for workplace illnesses and injuries should never be underestimated. OSHA requires all companies with 11 or more employees to prepare and maintain records of work-related injuries and illnesses.

There are several important documents to keep on hand:

    • 300 Form – (Log of Injuries and Illnesses) – for employers to record all reportable injuries and illnesses that occur in the workplace, where and when they occur, the nature of the case, the name and job title of the employee injured or made sick, and the number of days away from work or on restricted or light duty, if any.
    • 300-A Form - (Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses)  – to be posted in the workplace annually. At the end of each calendar year, Form 300-A must be completed and certified by a company executive as correct and complete and posted in the workplace where notices to workers are usually posted.
    • 301 Form - (Injury and Illness Incident Report) – used to record information on how each injury or illness case occurred.

You could order each individual form, holders for the forms, signs showing where the forms are located, etc.  Or, you can save yourself loads of time and money by ordering the OSHA 300 Information Center from Seton.

    OSHA 300 Information Center

The OSHA 300 Information Center provides you with all of the forms, signs, boards and racks that  you’ll need to organize your forms in one central location.

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) states that employers are required to “purchase and use personal protective equipment (PPE) to reduce employee exposure to hazards when engineering and administrative controls are not feasible or effective in reducing these exposures to acceptable levels.”

PPE is designed to protect employees from serious workplace injuries or illness resulting from contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical or other workplace hazards. In addition to commonly known PPE, such as safety glasses and hard hats , Seton will offer its customers a wide variety of new safety equipment and clothing, including an array of  faceshields, goggles, coveralls, gloves, vests, earplugs, respirators and much more.

Included in Seton’s new PPE line are many top brands, including 3M™, Moldex®, EAR, Harley Davidson®, Smith & Wesson®, Peltor™, Sperian, Bullard®, MSA and Dupont™.
